Introducing ourselves

The blz works as a bridge between scientific research and laser technology in industrial applications. Therefore, research represents one of the central foundations. In order to give new impulses to science and industry, the blz initiates regional, national and European research projects around applied laser technology. The cooperation with the German Research Foundation (DFG) also enables us to conduct fundamental research and to gain a deeper understanding of processes.

Through our research and development projects, we have acquired extensive knowledge in the field of applied laser technology. We use the competencies gained in this way to provide customer-specific support to companies as a transfer facility, engineering partner, testing laboratory and manufacturer of systems and components. The generated revenues are used to re-finance our research projects.

OUR NETWORK

Cooperation with partners from industry and science is essential for the development of any high technology, which is why we are involved in a large number of information and communication networks as well as in national and international cooperations.

The increasing importance of laser technology is reflected in the formation of a wide range of institutions, networks and funding programs.

For example, we are a member of the Bavarian competence network bayern photonics e.V. and cooperate closely with the Erlangen Graduate School in Advanced Optical Technologies (SAOT). Another focus in Erlangen is medical technology, in which we also cooperate with numerous partners. As a founding member of the German Industrial Research Association Konrad Zuse, which was established in 2015, the Bavarian Laser Center is also very well networked with non-profit research institutions throughout Germany. In addition, we have excellent contacts throughout the world. As part of our research and development activities, we not only work closely with European partners, we are also closely connected with the laser communities in the USA, Canada and Japan.

OUR HISTORY

Innovation from tradition

Since the early 1980s, Erlangen has developed into a stronghold of laser technology in Germany. The foundation of the Bayerisches Laserzentrum GmbH in 1993 is a direct consequence of the steadily growing importance of laser technology research at the Friedrich-Alexander-Universität Erlangen-Nürnberg (FAU). Since then, we have been developing new fields of application for the laser as a beam tool as an interface between academic basic research and industrial application. With the Chair of Photonic Technologies (LPT), founded in 2009, the blz has another strong partner from the academic environment of the Friedrich-Alexander University Erlangen-Nuremberg at its side.
